The very
best advise anyone can offer in regard to protecting your investment in your
vehicle is to change your oil on a regular basis. Normally, the time
between oil changes should be 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Each new vehicle is
equipped with a service manual, which should have a recommended schedule for
changing the oil.
New vehicles
initially have a more frequent oil change schedule. The engine is new and
is very tight. Some say and engine is never really broken in until after
the first 10,000 miles.
Over time
and usage in your engine, you oil accumulates both carbon (from the combustion
of fossil fuels) along with unwanted materials. Carbon is one of the best
known high temperature lubricants known to man. It's the unwanted items
that become problematic over time. If you were to burn used engine oil,
the residual material left over is not only carbon, but it contains contaminates
(like metal fines), which act over time to compromise an engine. There are
various oil filter types, each making their own claims on what they can an do
remove from the oil that circulates through your engine. Over time, the
filters capabilities diminish. It is for this reason, that scheduled
maintenance for changing the oil is necessary.
Synthetic
oils (Syn-Oils) are much more expensive but they also have a longer service life
as compared to common oil grades. Syn-Oils claim to also have higher
temperature profiles and greater lubricity than common oils. On some
gearbox applications, Syn-Oil can be drained, filtered and then reused.
Some of my customers swear by Syn-Oils and other will only use the common oil
grades. The choice is yours as we can accommodate
both.
