Let me tell
you directly, it's very difficult to destroy a differential unit as the
internals consist of a very rugged set of spiral-helical gearing. The
differentials purpose, on a rear wheel drive pick-up truck for example, is to
elevate and transmit torque perpendicular from the transmission to the rear
wheel axles. Since the differential is a gear reduction, it also boost the
torque by transmitting the engines power at a much lower rotational
speed.
For you
enthusiast, torque is proportional to horsepower divided by rotational
speed. The engines horsepower is developed at high speed (2500
RPM's). So at equivalent horsepower, through the differential, lowering
the speed increases the torque to the wheel axles, or in laymen's terms, the
available power.
Since the
differential operates using a gear reduction, it requires lubrication to
operate. Without proper lubrication, premature failure
can occur. Be sure that lubing the differential is included in your normal
yearly maintenance.
As for other
A-typical differential repairs, I've seen where the gears are completely
destroyed (teeth are broken off). Yes, it does happen from time to
time. No, it wasn't caused under a warranty failure. As you can
imagine the stories that come along with this A-typical damage can be very
interesting.
If you'd like to more more information about it, we'd be happy to provide you
